Clear Vision for a Bright Future: Understanding Your Child's Vision Screening
Good vision is fundamental to a child's learning, development, and overall well-being. To ensure every child in Sandwell has the best start, a Vision Screening Programme is offered to young children.
Vision screening is offered to children when they are in their Reception year at primary school (aged 4-5 years old). You will receive information and consent forms from your child's school or the local health team prior to the screening.
What to Expect:
Quick and Gentle: The screening is carried out in a private, quiet space within the school by a trained screener. It usually involves your child looking at pictures or letters on a chart, or using special equipment to check their eyes. It's designed to be a calm and reassuring experience.
No Drops or Pain: No eye drops are used, and the screening is completely painless.
Confidential Results: The results are sent directly and confidentially to you, the parent or carer. The school will not be informed of individual results.
Follow-up Support: If the screening suggests your child might have a vision problem, the letter will advise you to arrange a full eye examination with a local optician. This follow-up is important to get a definitive diagnosis and discuss any necessary treatment or glasses.
Participating in vision screening is a proactive step in safeguarding your child's eyesight and supporting their development.
