Understanding Your Child's Health: The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP)
As parents, we all want to ensure our children are growing up healthy and happy. The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a vital part of this and helps you understand the health and well-being your child.
What is the NCMP?
The NCMP is a national programme that measures the height and weight of children in Reception (aged 4-5) and Year 6 (aged 10-11) in primary schools. It's a quick, simple, and private check carried out by trained healthcare professionals, usually from the School Nursing team.
Why is it important?
Understanding Child Health Trends: The measurements are collected anonymously to give a picture of how children in Sandwell and across the country are growing. This helps health services plan and provide the right support for families.
Supporting Your Child's Health: For your child, it's an opportunity to receive feedback on their growth. If a child's weight is above or below the healthy range for their age and height, the School Nursing team can offer confidential advice and support to families. This is always done sensitively and non-judgmentally.
Early Intervention: Identifying trends early allows schools and health services to implement programmes and offer resources that promote healthy eating and active lifestyles for all children.
What to Expect:
It's Quick and Private: Measurements are taken in a private space within the school by a trained member of the School Nursing team. Your child will remain clothed and the process is discreet.
Consent: You will receive a letter from the school and/or the School Nursing team explaining the programme and seeking your consent for your child to participate. You have the choice to opt your child out if you prefer.
Confidential Results: Results are sent confidentially to you, the parent or carer, a few weeks after the measurements are taken. Neither the school nor other children will know your child's individual results.
Support is Available: If your child's measurements suggest they could benefit from some support, the letter will include information on how to access free, local advice from the School Nursing team or other health and lifestyle services. This support is always optional and tailored to your family's needs.
